SHARON JESSAR

I left a 42 year long career in non profit administration during the “Great Resignation” period of the pandemic, and retired in June, 2022.

Always drawn to abstract art, I began painting during retirement. Fleisher Art Memorial introduced me to figure drawing and ultimately painting. Henry Bermudez was my first teacher; he enjoyed the way I didn’t follow rules, and introduced me to the wild artist, Red Grooms. I became engrossed.

For me, the process of creating abstract art involves study, exploration, experimentation, concentration, and play. To “enter” a painting, I often use blind drawing to create a scenario of shapes drawn from life. Using color, shape, and line as materials, I focus on the way things fit together to form a whole. My work is inspired by everything I’ve learned in life so far- observation, relationships, grief, joy, humor, and deciding to live everyday with purpose.

Abstract art is not straightforward. It is beyond the literal. Look openly.
