MAGDALENA ELIAS

I draw inspiration for the latch-hook rugs from my environment. As an avid reader of wide range of subjects, I choose to re-envision many of the female characters and historical figures as bold, multi-racial, strong, and beautiful. I especially focus on those figures whose characterizations I find objectionable, such as Medusa or Mary Magdalene. My rendering of Medusa, in which I combined visuals of the gorgon with the powerful goddess Kali, represents my multi-cultural approach to deconstruction and subsequent reconstruction of these well-known female figures. As an avid museum goer, I like to re-imagine many of the paintings and sculptures to fit my own understanding of aesthetics. My rendering of many of Picasso's works represents my own venturing into the spacial/temporal connection.
