Carol Albrecht: Nature Waxing & Waning

December 2 - December 27, 2015

First Friday: December 4, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, December 6, 2 - 5pm

Color continues to be the focus in the landscapes and still lifes of Carol Albrecht.  Full sunlight, with warm and cool shadows, has been effective in depicting nature’s broad vistas of mountains and canyons, and equally useful depicting more intimate still lifes of flowers, leaves, etc.

More recently, the artist has experimented with observing the more subtle colors found in the fading blossoms and withering plants of nature.  Her recent work contrasts  still lifes of nature in full bloom, and then in decline, and she finds this later stage with subdued colors also interesting.

Magdalena Elias: Everything Is Illuminated

December 2 - December 27, 2015

First Friday: December 4, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, December 6, 2 - 5pm

I began weaving gobelins two years after my friend Karen’s unexpected death.  While sitting on another friend's couch, some thoughts were breaking through that overwhelming darkness that was surrounding me every minute since Karen’s "promotion."  In those moments I was deluged by random memories of conversations we had about ... everything.  Eventually, a single memory came to predominate—Karen and I, sitting at Zeda’s Latte Lounge, drinking some of Zeda’s specialty blend, laughing at our quixotic existence.  As I meditated upon that memory, my first design, Don Quixote tilting at the windmill giant, emerged.

A second, companion memory—of my venerable Grandfather Miloslav—gifted me with the means to express Karen’s inspiration.  In my mind’s eye I could visualize him sitting in his  favorite chair, working on something he called gobelin.  As he worked, his peacefulness radiated outward and I wanted to share in that peacefulness, so I began work on my first piece, “The Inversion of Don Quixote.”  Shortly after its completion, another memory cascaded into my consciousness: Karen and I having a heated discussion about afterlife and Chinese mythology. Thus, my "Connector of the World," my interpretation of the dragon that carried the non-corporeal part of Karen to the afterlife.

As personal, slow, and dim a process of mourning is, the monotony and tedium of hooking, latching, and tying acquired a luminous, meditative quality.  I have come to realize that this process is reciprocally reproducing: I create it and creates me, simultaneously, instantaneously, eternally loving EVERYTHING into existence.   EVERYTHING is illuminated.  EVERYTHING is perpetual awakening.  EVERYTHING is the Aurora of memories made manifest.

Constance Cone: Landscape - Horizon

November 4 - November 29, 2015

First Friday: November 6, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, November 8, 2 - 5pm

The lure of landscape continues, becoming more and more focused on the horizon line.  Sometimes the horizon is blurred, sometimes it’s a tiny part of a landscape, sometimes the whole expanse from left to right.  Working with soft pastels, color and the mark propel the image.  The new work ranges from the very abstract to the more representational.

Cone will be showing work along side long time friend and graduate school classmate, Demetra Tassiou Panidis (MFA University of Pennsylvania, 1994).

Katherine Kurtz: In the Garden: New Figures

September 2 - September 27, 2015

First Friday: September 4, 5 - 9 pm

In this show, Katherine Kurtz returns to painting the figure, larger and more loosely than ever.  Often monumental in size, the paintings nevertheless convey an intimacy and a tenderness.

She says “This new work grew out of my love of painting the figure intuitively.  Whole paintings developed from gestures that began cooperating with one another, showingme glimpses of experience,  emotionsor states of being.  I hope viewers will bring themselves into the gardens presented here and find resonance with their own lives.”

The large canvases are filled with movement and light which shine through and around sometimes mysterious figures.  She uses gestural drawing and brush work to activate the surfaces while still expressing an overall serenity. Pentimenti offers us glimpses ofmemory and perhaps the history of the very painting and, as one form veils another, we get a sense of spaces and worlds beyond the canvas.

Bruce Garrity: Recent Work

September 2 - September 27, 2015

First Friday: September 4, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, September 13, 1 - 4 pm

Garrity's poetic figurative paintings utilize a broad vocabulary of painterly means in the pursuit of visual drama. The surfaces of the works range from light washes, direct drawing, scumbles and layerings to heavy impastos of the mostly saturated color palette. Garrity draws on various methods of construction, to bring the works to fruition: direct perception, memory, invention and combinations of these. The paintings, some as large as eight by ten feet, depict figures and objects life size at the picture plane so one feels they can be entered and engaged directly. They are autobiographical of interests over a long period of time.

The artist will present a walk through gallery talk on Sunday, September 20th beginning at 2pm.

Keith Sharp: Projections

July 1 - August 2, 2015

First Friday: July 3, 5 - 9 pm

In the Talking Heads song, (Nothing But) Flowers, David Byrne sings of a world where modern progress has reverted to a more natural state. In his new body of work, Sharp also reverts to nature once again. Sharp used photographs of natural scenes, a digital projector, and a laptop to project natural images onto the sides of houses at night or onto himself that he then extracted and in which he placed the figure back into the natural scene being projected.

Sharp’s connection to the natural world came about from his life long love of the outdoors, nature, and gardening. In Japan, they use the word Satoyama to describe people living in harmony with nature.

June 3 - June 28, 2015

First Friday: June 5, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: June 7, 1 - 4 pm

3rd Street Gallery presents Fragments, a solo-exhibition by Philadelphia based artist Matthew Hall. Using sumi ink and walnut ink on paper, Hall has created delicately illustrated scenes, capturing select moments that hint to a larger story. These presentations take both the form of individual excerpts mounted on separate panels, as well as winding accordion-fold books displaying layered imagery suggesting a stream of thought. As Hall states, “I am interested in narrative. Specifically, what we infer with limited amounts of information available to discern what transpired. My selections are that of the flaneur—the detached observer—carefully selecting moments that string together the experience of a space from within.

Nicole Patrice Dul: In Catacumbis, New Prints and Paintings

June 3 - June 28, 2015

First Friday: June 5, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: June 7, 1 - 4 pm

Nicole Patrice Dul exhibits In Catacumbis (Among the Catacombs) displaying new print works and mixed media paintings. The works featured in the exhibit draw from the history of sacred catacombs and link the past with the neglected of the present.

Catacombs or hollows symbolize that which is hidden, forgotten, has been left to waste or laid to rest.  Nicole creates catacombs of the discarded by depicting empty space, uninhabited buildings, abandoned objects and anonymous people. She examines social geography and seeks to open dialogue about common experiences that come with place, space and national identity.

D. S. Nicholas: implicative_contemplative_formative

March 4 - March 29, 2015

First Friday: March 6, 5 - 9 pm

This work traces a process of visual exploration over the past four years. It includes the proposal of panels for the interior environment and two dimensional works that explore interior patterns. Graphically the work travels the intentional use of a variety of technologies real and imagined. Culminating in a proposed prototypical interior system for wall panels. My work is a product of information technologies, and computer generated imagery filtered through human hands. The imagery is derived from a number of sources such as ancient architectural plans, mundane and special interior spaces, Space Mountain, digital models, found objects and natural animal habitats. These ancient, natural and sometimes modern references are then denied their completion by way of the hand, natural design or architectural elements. This transfer does not disrupt the overall aesthetic enjoyment from these collaborative worlds. In fact, the artist acts as an enabler for the viewer’s unique journey into this strange and captivating internal visual structure.
