Katherine Kurtz: In the Garden: New Figures

September 2 - September 27, 2015

First Friday: September 4, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, September 13, 1 - 4 pm

In this show, Katherine Kurtz returns to painting the figure, larger and more loosely than ever.  Often monumental in size, the paintings nevertheless convey an intimacy and a tenderness.

She says “This new work grew out of my love of painting the figure intuitively.  Whole paintings developed from gestures that began cooperating with one another, showingme glimpses of experience,  emotionsor states of being.  I hope viewers will bring themselves into the gardens presented here and find resonance with their own lives.”

The large canvases are filled with movement and light which shine through and around sometimes mysterious figures.  She uses gestural drawing and brush work to activate the surfaces while still expressing an overall serenity. Pentimenti offers us glimpses ofmemory and perhaps the history of the very painting and, as one form veils another, we get a sense of spaces and worlds beyond the canvas.
