This exhibition will consist of large-format black-on-white paintings ("Leanderthals") based on the artist's brush drawings of real and imaginary creatures. In addition, white-on-black paintings of the "First Hedgehog" fantasy series will be on display.

Carol Wisker’s background in painting and drawing continues to inform her love of texture, line, repetition and excess in sculpture and installation, combining found wood and rubber dimensional forms with cotton fibers, silk cocoons and colored synthetic, silk and rayon cording that are wrapped and unwrapped, frayed, knotted, twisted, braided and deconstructed into tendrils. Traditional domestic materials, such as tassels and braiding, are used in a nontraditional manner creating strings and ” lumps and bumps” in humorous and decorative ways on spheres, columns and multitudes of cones, both grounded and floating.
“Wrapped and Unwrapped” is Wisker’s sixth solo exhibition with the 3rd Street Gallery

This body of work was created in response to years of chewing on ideas about mental health care as experienced personally as well as through second-hand experiences of my family members and close friends. Large and small scale drawings are rendered in layers of vellum and acrylic resin to depict the construction and launch of Mars rovers. This show is for my dad, who was in outer space a lot of the time.

This August the Light Room, one of Philadelphia’s select photography organizations, will return to 3rd Street Gallery on Second Street for their summer annual group exhibition. Ten member photographers will present their latest work over a range of media and subject matter.
"This show has something for everyone,” says Al Wachlin Jr, Co-Director of the Light Room and show organizer. “It’s always a pleasure to see the diversity of our member’s work, which encompasses both historic and alternate photographic processes as well as modern methods.”
The Light Room is an artist-run non-profit photographic arts center in Philadelphia. Our goal is to foster an environment in which members can achieve their photographic objectives through the use of modern, professional darkroom and studio facilities, ongoing education, and the sharing of ideas.

This series of recent paintings is mostly inspired by the Czech composers Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony From the New World, and Bedrich Smetana’s My Fatherland symphonic poems, and by the Chilean composers Juan Orrego-Salas (Sextet for B flat clarinet, string quartet & piano, Op. 38, movement 3. Scherzo) and Enrique Soro (DanzaFantástica.)
Immersed in this music as I painted, I felt it flow through me physically and found myself expressing both the movement of the music and my own emotions in free and spontaneous brush strokes that are musical as well as gestural.
The resultant paintings serve as coded maps, leading the viewer to the Illo Tempore where, over time, our roots spread wider and wider until we are part of a universal root system without cultural, territorial, or continental distinctions. This journey toward universal origins intrigues me and spontaneously appears into my paintings.
In 2015 part of this series will be exhibited in Barcelona, Spain, and in Viña del Mar, Chile as well.

Our Better Angels.
Artists live where all dreams end. Truth, Illusion are a dance of apparitions. You try to capture them. Smoke and mirrors are what you usually get – sometimes life’s magic.
I remember the story Henry Miller wrote about the angel he painted quite by accident. I never painted an angel. Maybe I’ll find one hiding in my canvas as Henry did. An angel today, a devil tomorrow, nothing unusual for an artist’s studio. That is the sort of place one goes to ponder good and evil and to confront that meeting between thought and instinct, peace and violence, greed and giving, which we all share if we dare.
After decades of war and recession, discord and intolerance, this exhibit reflects upon the angst of those times and the hopes and dreams for better times to come.

I have always been interested in painting landscapes and still lifes. As the phenomenon of light defines a view for me, this visual perception stirs color in my imagination like a kaleidoscope! Facets of colors swirl in front of me. My paintbrush and palette knife play a duet in mixing warm and cool colors from fiery yellows and reds to frosty blues and violets. The endeavor begins.

Landscape exerts a powerful siren call, even for an abstract artist. Through the first half of her career, Constance Cone was a still life photographer who worked in platinum and palladium. The pull of landscape exerted itself as she began to work in the field, finding ways to use the special look of those two non-silver techniques. When she moved into painting and printmaking while getting her MFA at the University of Pennsylvania, her work took a detour into the totally abstract. But once again, the paintings began to look and feel more and more like landscape. She now says: “I am, unabashedly, a landscape artist with a healthy dose of the abstract thrown in.”
Over the past two years, Cone has been interested in two rather differing landscapes: western scenes with a very limited though gorgeous palette and water views which feel much more representational. The pastels for this show have emerged side by side.

I find inspiration in the mundane world around me. Water running down the shower door, cracks in the sidewalk, peeled wallpaper and branches that have fallen to the ground open up new worlds for me. I work in paper pulp because it lends itself to image exploration. As I manipulate the pulp something new and unexpected appears before me. I am not looking for perfection, but imperfection.

Cities are organisms. They are “born” (gradually evolving or ceremonially founded). They grow large, prosper, cultivate a specialized focus (government capital or trade hub) that makes an impact on local, regional global affairs. Some survive near-death experiences (Rome and the Huns, New Orleans and Katrina) but all- in the end- do “die”. Sometimes catastrophically (like Pompeii) or, more likely, gradually withering away. But virtually no ancient city, on any continent, has ever survived long term.
I am a lifelong Philadelphian and do love the best that this city can offer. But there are many things it is not, never became and might never be…and I worry. The clinical term is “BURNOUT”- stressed too frequently and for too long, exhausted, misdirected, disillusioned with what has been accomplished, cynical over the future. There are many recommendations for how to personally cope with burnout, but I look at patterns of urban burnout. This exhibit of mixed media collages is a collection of my choices.

The last few years I have been combining in my work two different media, painting and printmaking, creating a dialogue between them. The use of these two opposite techniques and dynamics, gave me the challenge to experiment with shapes and colors in order to produce a final image. The irreversible patterns of my printed collagraphs are enhanced and complemented by the colors and liquidity of the acrylics.
As a story teller, I compose pictures of places and objects that exist in vibrant dreams and fantasies by reaching to the deepest and unexplored corners of my mind.
