I am a photographer who not only takes photographs, but one who also creates or constructs images.. I attempt to create mysterious, subtle, and poetic images that cause the viewer to do a double take. By transforming the ordinary world around me I create images that play tricks on our perception.

In my paintings and works on paper, elements of nature are magnified, overlapped and obscured, reflecting the continual growth and change, which is the touchstone of the natural world. By altering the scale of the forms and elements, the work suggests shared origins: cellular structures, earth and landscape formations.

Interact is an exploration of many related things. Our surroundings in the world, the beautiful remnants of our industrious lives, physical and emotional density and space, the interaction of objects and their metaphorical significance, the fragility of nature, the cycle of consumption and production and in the end, the materials themselves.

This exhibit is about following the paint.

For the last year, I have been struggling to find my way back into painting - trying, giving up, trying again. I have been stuck without ideas or with ideas that translated only into stale pictures of no interest even to me.

So I persisted. Eventually I found that when I set out to explore shapes and colors, the paint led me insistently to figures. And when I had intentions towards figure or landscape, more abstract paintings evolved.  Here are some of each.

In my paintings, my immediate environment as well as my personal response to that environment, find convergence.  My drawing and acrylic work are the departure points from which I begin to explore the inner world.  Trees and landscape in particular inspire because of their anthropological and organic qualities.  They are a link between the generations and create powerful connections. This for me is a hopeful act.

Almost all my work has its roots in nature. The images are about organizing what I perceive and feel. They are not about creating a totally literal landscape.

The viewer is invited into the atmosphere of a place where they experience the feeling of this space. Atmosphere is often expressed through the fluid reflections of light on water and land and the different elements that obscure these reflections.

Many of my paintings depict a moment in time apart from the rapid change in light and contrast. This sense of immediacy allows the viewer to be a part of nature rather than apart from it.

All of my works in oil are created from a build up of many layers of transparent and opaque colors.

My great source of inspiration to paint comes from nature and colors.

Amid a hectic whir of machines and technology, my companions in nature: the sun, the moon, their seasons; trees and flowers, their colors, breath into me peace and beauty. When I look around at nature, I feel similarities to the journey of my life - changes in nature and in my feelings.

Nature, through the observation of it, the memory of it, and my imagination of it, inspires me.

I don't paint ordinary landscape. I add my feelings into it. As I recreate it, I am renewed. Each scene calls forth technique that uniquely fits it.

As an artist, I hope my art work can be enjoyable, heart warming and relaxing for my viewers.

This collection of drawings represents a fraction of the 1,115 species identified on the U.S. endangered species list. I want to compose a showcase for these imperiled creatures, capturing their wide range of forms, patterns, textures and personalities. To ensure accuracy, these drawings are periodically reviewed by an extremely helpful and generous group of biologists: Dr. Benjamin Keck, a post-doctoral associate at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Kristen Kuhn, a research affiliate at the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture; Dr. Thomas Near, associate professor at Yale University and curator of the Yale University Peabody Museum of Natural History; and Greg Watkins–Colwell, collections manager of Herpetology & Ichthyology at the Yale University Peabody Museum of Natural History. Working from photographs, I create these pen and ink drawings while riding the train to and from work.

Representatives from the Nature Conservancy as well as a Pennsylvania based scientist will be on hand during the First Friday reception to answer questions about environmental issues facing the region and to offer information about their work and local volunteer opportunities.

Offering is a site specific performance and installation piece at 3rd Street Gallery during the month of May, 2013. The large scale installation consists of a pile of crocheted stones in the gallery that mimic the offerings we leave for religious deities, for the dead and for marking our way home. 

Ms. Haims will be in the gallery from noon until 3 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for the entire month long exhibition, crocheting live and adding to the sculpture.

This exhibition of abstract fiber sculpture and installation refers to the dense massing in natural growth, created from repurposed and recycled cotton tufting, fibers, silk cocoons and bone.

Along with the First Friday and Artists Receptions, we will also be hosting the Space Whale Orchestra on Saturday, April 6th. They will be performing live improvisational music in the gallery from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

This series of interiors is inspired by color, emotion and family heirlooms. Tables, chairs, dishes, silverware..., ordinary objects that can represent comfort, nourishment, joy and stability. With paint, I create scenes where everything is in place, yet nothing is being utilized. What kind of emotional climate can be conveyed through color, composition and subject matter?

The Inner Codes series originated from my method of “calligraphic” painting: using spontaneous drawing, to evoke a primal mode of communication. I do these paintings from a gestalt conception, connecting with the present time or the here and now, developing in that way my own new magical codes.
