Kathleen Shaver: Solo Show

December 5 - December 30, 2012

First Friday: December 7, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Saturday, December 9, 2 - 5 pm

This body of work represents my interest in the physicality of paint and the activity of mark making. The effects of gesture, accretion and excavation as well as the discovery of serendipity, contest, and conundrum are engaging aspects of the process that I seek.

Currently, I am most influenced by abstract expressionism and neo-expressionism and admire deeply the work of painters such as Willem DeKooning, Philip Guston, and Joan Mitchell as well as contemporary greats such as Cecily Brown, Anselm Kiefer, and Neo Rauch.

Rex Sexton: Paper Moon

December 5 - December 30, 2012

First Friday: December 7, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Saturday, December 9, 2 - 5 pm

Rex Sexton is a Surrealist painter based in Philadelphia and Chicago.  His award winning art has been televised on PBS, written about in newspapers, reproduced in magazines and included in national and international exhibitions.  Of his recent exhibit in Chicago the critic Robin Dluzen wrote in Chicago Art Magazine: “Sexton’s work … brings to mind the flattened forms and spaces and line qualities of Miro … [and] the bizarre figures and spaces of Chagall.  Bridging reality and fantasy, Sexton’s paintings emotionally engage viewers with multitudes of figures and multitudes of vivid expressions.”

Jeffery McNary wrote in New City: “Growing up in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, Sexton ‘saw hardships with no let up.’  He paints ‘expressions of humanity with the hope that I capture its dreams in the midst of adversity.’ Romanticism emerges in his stunning [Piaf] oil painting.  This semi-cubist portrait of Edith Piaf seduces with thick, deep layers of tans and blacks, doe eyes and arched eyebrows.”

Demetra Tassiou Panidis: Escapes

August 29 - September 30, 2012

First Friday: September 7, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, September 14, 5 - 8 pm

Each painting in this series began with a selection and matching of random fragments of prints. A variety of colors and styles of printed pieces were combined to create distinct objects which interact and bond in complex ways to compose a final image that exhibits a particular vision of mine. The challenge of this process gave me the energy and inspiration to go deeper into my imagination and develop new inter-winding shapes connecting with the background. The exploration of the various prints, the evolution of images through colors, and their relationship with space became my perceived task that led to the creation of these paintings. Although the central figures may look like giant insects, non existing and unidentifiable, they are part of a surreal world of motion and fantasy.

John James Pron: Fracking Rome

August 29 - September 30, 2012

First Friday: September 7, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, September 14, 5 - 8 pm

I am a practicing architect, a university professor who lectures on the history of architecture, and a person who loves to draw in black and white - in defiance of the increasing digitizing of worldwide communications media.

This is a collection of charcoal, ink and black prismacolor drawings inspired by a spring semester teaching in Rome, Italy.  My interest is not in literally representing existing iconic buildings and space, as so many people have done just that.  Rather, I seek to re-interpret original designs of many eras, re-imagining other spatial configurations, adding and subtracting details and elements, defying gravity, rewriting history - basically projecting my personal vision of a Rome that is perhaps more edgy, more ambiguous and more unsettling than simple reality.

Much as the process of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) releases unseen energies below the surface of the earth, I seek to manifest my perception of the potent inner life that has sustained Roman culture over the millennia, and that emerges in its architectural settings.

The Light Room's 2012 Annual Group Photography Exhibition

August 1 - August 26, 2012

First Friday: August 3, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, August 5, 2 - 5 pm

Closing Reception: Sunday, August 26, 2 - 5 pm

The Light Room, Philadelphia's only photography co-op, will once again have its annual group exhibition, featuring a variety of mediums and subject matter by nine local photographers.

"This show highlights how eclectic photography can be," says Light Room member Erin Yard. Photos of America's majestic Southwest as well as Italy's alluring Abruzzo region juxtapose the gritty black-and-white images of one of Philadelphia's most infamous neighborhoods. Other pieces attempt to capture that “decisive moment” through street photography. There are, in addition, a series of appropriated NASA photos of the sun, which were digitally altered and mounted on gold leaf. "This show," Yard adds, "truly showcases some of Philadelphia's finest photographers and their work."

Exhibiting Artists:

Glenn Bizewski • Richard Boutwell • Lina Cedeno • Ronald Corbin • Annarita Gentile • Kateri Likoudis • Harvey Stern • Al Wachlin Jr • Erin Yard

First Friday: July 6, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, July 15, 1 - 4 pm

As the sun sweeps across the landscape and stuns my eyes, I am drawn to painting.  A blank canvas excites my imagination, as the process of selecting and rejecting colors begins.  The attempt to paint connects the earth beyond to my self within as I strive and struggle to express an enigma.

Keith Sharp: Fabricated

May 30 - July 1, 2012

First Friday: June 1, 5 - 9 pm

Artist Reception: Sunday, June 10, 1 - 4 pm

Ever since artist,  Keith Sharp, was a little boy, he has always had a love of nature – camping, gardening, plants, walking in parks, and just being outdoors. For many years now, he has been creating photographs of props that he places in real scenes - either outdoors in natural settings or by bringing the natural world inside. In this current series, he began to experiment with printing images of natural scenes and plants on to cotton and silk that he then sewed, staged, re-photographed and then digitally collaged into various scenes.  A surrealist at heart, Sharp attempts to create mysterious and subtle images that causes the viewer to do a double take.

"We all play a part in fabricating the world around us. There will always be two worlds – the natural and the manmade." - Keith Sharp
